4 FREE Art Activities for Families this Summer

School is finally out for the summer, so we’ve rounded up a number of fun, FREE family events to add to your calendar. Enjoy outdoor movies under the sunset, make art on historic Governors Island, spend an evening at CMA…the creative fun awaits!

Tribeca Drive In Dinner and a Movie at Westfield World Trade Center
Bring a blanket and relax on the Oculus Plaza at Westfield World Trade Center while you watch classic family movies on a giant outdoor screen. Hosted by Tribeca Film Festival and Westfield on select Saturdays through the summer, Drive In Dinner and a Movie will screen kid favorites including Ghostbusters, Enchanted, and Spider-man. The screening is free, but make sure you show up early to get a good spot! You can also purchase food and beverages from Eataly. Night at the Museum is screening next Saturday, July 8, at 7:30 PM.

Free Arts Island Outpost on Governors Island
Every Saturday and Sunday through September 30, you can create art for free with CMA Teaching Artists on Governors Island. From 11 – 3 PM young artists can make art outdoors using found objects and traditional mediums. This is a space to invent, adapt, and transform your relationship to art and the art making process.

Pay-As-You Wish on Thursday evenings at CMA
On Thursdays from 4-6 PM, admission to CMA is pay-as-you-wish. Join us for painting and sculpture in the Fine Arts Studio, sculpt a creature at the Clay Bar, make a movie in the Media Lab, and dig your fingers into gooey flubber in WEE! Everything offered during general admission is available during our pay-as-you-wish hours, but Clay Bar often fills up fast!

CMA Workshop at Blick’s Bond St. Store
Create an abstract drawing with CMA Teaching Artist Georgina at the Blick store on Bond Street. Young artists will create a composition based on a unique shape using a grid as guidance. Then they can use sticker material to fill their composition however they like! The sticker paper can be cut into any shape and any colors can be used to show how easy and fun abstraction can be! The free workshop is open to all from 2-5 PM. Loved creating art at the workshop? You can pick up supplies right from Blick and continue the art-making at home.
