Some of today’s most well known artists have made their work on the streets. From the New York graffiti scene, Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat all the way to contemporary artists Banksy and Swoon, artists have often created work that can exist on building walls and gallery walls alike! In this exciting new class, young artists will be able to create their own stencils and stickers that showcase their own message, sign, or symbol. They will also experiment with “yarn bombing” at CMA: colorful public installations made from wrapping yarn! Students will be learning about the history of and techniques used in street art, but will not be encouraged to engage in graffiti.
