For over 20 years Tape Art has traveled to schools, hospitals, museums, and city streets across America to work collaboratively in the creation of large murals made entirely of tape. Acting as public artists even before they knew what the term meant, the Providence-based group led by Michael Townsend utilizes this form for personal expression, art education, and art as a form of healing. The exhibition Tape Art: Let’s Draw Together! will transform CMA’s gallery space into a canvas for new drawings created by the Tape Artists in collaboration with CMA’s young artist community.
Exhibitions at CMA aim to engage children in an interactive artmaking experience with professional artists. Through the use of a “suggestion box” children can request anything they want to be drawn and several times throughout the course of the exhibition the Tape Artists will honor these requests. Each time new drawings are made the previous ones will be documented, disassembled, and displayed as photographs. To this end, the gallery space will slowly be transformed from tape drawings to photographs of the drawings, resulting in a final exhibition of the drawing requests. The request process originated in the Tape Artists’ volunteer work at the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island.
Please join CMA on opening day to participate in workshops lead by the Tape Artists!
