CMA Stories

CMA Visits Stephen Antonakos’ Studio in Soho!

Join us Sunday, July 14 for a celebration of Greek culture! CMA is partnering with Astoria’s Greek Cultural Center and the Pontian Society Komninoi of NY to present performances and interactive workshops. Story Time takes place at 11 am featuring books by Greek authors read by Children’s Librarian Kristy Raffensberger of the Hudson Park Library. Eleni Tsarsitalidou and Dimitri Stefanidis of the Pontian Society Komninoi of NY will be sharing traditional dance and music from the shores of the Black Sea at 12 pm and 2 pm.

Sunday’s Media Lab workshop is inspired by the work of the late Stephen Antonakos. Born in Greece, Stephen grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and has played a leading role in the New York arts community of Lower Manhattan since 1960. This Sunday, make your own eclipsing light animation inspired by Antonakos’ neon works! Look to prints from his studio for inspiration, and with the help of a CMA Teaching Artist, use light tables, shapes, and found objects to create your own animations.

We were graciously invited to tour Antonakos’ home studio down the street from CMA on West Broadway in Soho. Warm thanks to Naomi Antonakos for showing us around the studio and sharing inspiring details about Stephen’s life and legacy!

This program is supported, in part, by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the New York State Council on the Arts with support of Governor Andrew Cuomo, and public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs. This month of CIVICKIDS activity is sponsored by Trinity Church at Wall St.
