Walker Presents “Walker’s Spoilery” at Ace Hotel New York This Fall

Children’s Museum of the Arts is pleased to present Walker’s Spoilery, a public art installation at the Ace Hotel New York featuring works by Walker the puppet. Opening September 14, 2022, the installation will be on view to the public in The Gallery at Ace Hotel New York until October 14, 2022.

Walker is a South Florida-born, New York-based sculptor and video artist. The videos are directed by Children’s Museum of the Arts’ Artist-Educator Frank Traynor. Walker’s long standing collaborative practice with Frank includes diaristic video-based investigations of nature, art and community.

“Both Walker and his pal Frank show us that imagination isn’t separate from the world; it is part of the world; it makes the world,” said CMA Executive Director Seth Cameron. “We’ve been so happy to share their vision with our community of young artists, and are thrilled to share it with new audiences through this project in The Gallery at Ace Hotel.”

Walker’s Spoilery presents a selection of small and strange sculptures made from materials such as coral, fossil, and snail shells, all gathered around the New York City area, as well as short films documenting Walker’s foraging and studio process. He will use Ace Hotel’s exhibition space to curate a selection of extraordinarily small and strange sculptures made from materials such as coral, fossil, and turtle shells, all gathered around the New York City area.

“These are some ideas I had using snail shells and coral and some trilobites that I found- and pewter and copper and tin. I hope you guys like them. I think you guys will like them.” said Walker.

The word “spoilery” has two meanings — the content collected by dredging a lake or mining land, as well as the treasures and wealth looted during battle. These works in this exhibition are all made using foraged material, inciting curiosity and fantasy in their intentional exploration of the liminal space between reality and make-believe.

To celebrate the opening of Walker’s installation, CMA and Ace Hotel New York will be hosting a cocktail reception on September 14, 2022 from 6 PM to 8 PM.
